A couple of years ago a friend asked me if I wanted to help her find homes for some dogs that had been used for breeding at the facility where she worked. Not really knowing what I was getting myself into, I said “sure!” I think I thought that it would be a few dogs here or there. It has been hundreds in the last two years, and it could have been more if I had more room. My first foster dog was a little long haired Chihuahua that I named Senor Scaredy Pants, Senor for short, because he was so scared of humans. I spent countless hours chasing him around my yard when I needed to bring him into the house. I have since learned to put a harness and leash on all new fosters for the first few weeks until they let me handle them. It took 6 or 7 months, but he eventually started to come to me for small amounts of affection. I still remember the first time I saw him run in my back yard just for fun, not because he was scared. The look of pure joy on his face still brings tears to my eyes. A nice older couple found Senor on Adoptapet and gave him a great home. I still get updates from time to time on his progress. I still miss him. There has now been about two and half years and more than a hundred scared puppy mill dogs have passed through my house. Each one of them has taught me something new about patience and love. This blog will be about my journey as a rescuer, as well as some of the other foster parents from A Soft Place to Land.
